How to Build a Privacy Fence
You may not know, but it’s not overly difficult to build a fence
for your yard. Here are some tips on how to build a privacy
fence.
Fence posts should be spaced about 6’ to 8’ apart. Before
driving stakes into the ground though, you’ll want to set the
corner post first. Then you can align the rest. Spacing the fence
posts is a very important step.
After you’ve made stake markers, you can place the posts into
the ground. About a third of each post should be underground. The
corner posts should be extra secure, as they are what truly anchor
your fence. But before placing the posts into the ground, put a
stone or two shovels of gravel into the bottom of each hole. This
will prevent moisture from collecting and weakening the soil. Also,
make sure that the holes are larger at the bottom than at the top –
this will ensure that the posts fit nice and snug.
Once you’ve adjusted the posts so that they are each in an
exact, upright position, brace each post with stakes. After they
posts settle, you can then remove the nails of the braces but your
corner posts will need extra bracing. It might be a good idea for
you to take the effort to round out the heads of your posts, as
this will make your fence last longer.
After several days, you can then add
rails. There are a lot of techniques for this, but you can
simply nail a bottom and top rail to every post – it’s up to
you. The next step is the most complicated and it will require
you to determine the precise purpose of your fence.
Hundreds of fence styles exist and a variety of construction
materials are needed for each individual style – you’ll want to
investigate all your options and then possibly consult an employee
at a hardware store about what items to purchase. There are
specific types of barriers that you can purchase that are ideal for
privacy fences. If you’re looking for a privacy fence, you’ll
probably favor the more decorative styles.
You can even add a bit of shrubbery next to your privacy fence
to make it visually appealing on the outside while still shielding
the inside.
Finally, you’ll want to check with your neighbors to make sure you
aren’t building your fence on their property. As well, local
ordinances have construction codes – don’t violate them!
Hopefully you now know how to build a privacy fence and can save
some time and money with these tips. When building a fence, just
remember to not cut any corners, but instead properly secure
them!
